Virtual Surgery

Virtual Surgery is a secure, HIPAA-compliant SaaS platform designed to create a live, real-time bridge into operating rooms. It enables verified stakeholders-such as medical experts, product specialists, and academic observers-to join surgeries remotely through a high-fidelity, low-latency video feed. This platform modernizes surgical collaboration, providing seamless, secure streaming while respecting the extreme sensitivity of the operating room environment.

Project Overview

Developing software for live surgical environments is no ordinary task—it requires a strong focus on security, reliability, performance, and compliance. My role involved both reviving a legacy system and leading the engineering effort to build its next-generation version.

Scope of work

1. Client Requirements & Technical Planning

  • Conducted structured analysis of technical, UX, and legal/compliance requirements.
  • Assessed legacy system limitations and defined architectural improvements.

2. Legacy System Maintenance & Upgrades

  • Maintained and enhanced a legacy Node.js backend, stabilizing critical features and ensuring uninterrupted service during active surgeries.
  • Applied incremental improvements without disrupting real-time usage.

3. Rebuilding the Platform – Modern Frontend

  • Developed a new, optimized web application with enhanced performance and accessibility.
  • Handled custom styling to match brand guidelines and meet stringent usability criteria across surgical settings.

4. Real-Time Communication & Streaming

  • Implemented support for live video and audio streaming using WebSockets and real-time transport protocols.
  • Focused on minimizing latency and maintaining stream integrity under medical-grade conditions.

5. Serverless Backend Enhancements

  • Leveraged AWS Lambda to offload compute-heavy tasks, reduce server strain, and scale horizontally on-demand.
  • Integrated serverless logic seamlessly into the existing infrastructure.
