DJI's Avata 360 Answers Insta360, and Moves the Shot Into Post
There is a category of product that exists mainly because a competitor proved the category could exist. DJI's Avata 360, launched March 26, is one: its first drone built around 360-degree capture, arriving roughly a year after Insta360's Antigravity A1 demonstrated that a spherical-camera drone was a real idea and not just a novelty. DJI let someone else take the first risk, then showed up with better flight tech, a lower price, and one feature the pioneer cannot match.
The idea: stop framing, start reframing
The pitch reorders the whole workflow. Instead of composing a shot while flying, the Avata 360 captures everything around it at once using two 1-inch-equivalent sensors that together record full spherical 8K/60fps video and 120-megapixel stills. You fly, it records the entire sphere, and you choose the actual shot afterward in DJI's Fly and Studio apps, panning, tilting, and reframing a single flight into several finished clips. The pressure of nailing the frame in the moment simply goes away, which lowers the barrier for beginners and hands professionals a pile of usable angles from one pass.
Software built around that premise includes Spotlight Free and ActiveTrack 360 for subject tracking, a Virtual Gimbal for infinite rotation from the captured sphere, and an FPV mode that adds a natural roll in post. The raw resolution is the working material; the edit is where the shot is born.
The move that separates it from the A1
Here is the differentiator that matters. The Avata 360 has a Single Lens mode that switches the camera into a conventional forward-facing 4K/60fps FPV configuration, the classic Avata shooting style. The rival Antigravity A1 is fixed in 360 mode only. So DJI's drone is really two drones: an immersive 360 rig and a traditional FPV quad, toggled by a tiltable camera module. For a pilot who already flies FPV and does not want to buy a semi-redundant second aircraft, that dual-mode flexibility is the argument.
The ecosystem argument reinforces it. The Avata 360 slots into DJI's existing goggles, motion controllers, and RC hardware, proven O4+ transmission (up to 20km range, 1080p/60 live feed), and deep manufacturing scale, so an existing DJI pilot upgrades rather than starts over. Flight time is a rated 23 minutes, it carries 42GB of internal storage, and the front lens is field-replaceable, a genuinely practical touch for a drone whose lenses sit exposed. One honest caveat DJI's own footnotes concede: headline figures like 8K/60 and 23 minutes apply only in certain modes or with specific accessories, so full-resolution 360 flying will run shorter.
The price, and the pattern
On price DJI did what DJI does. The drone-only Avata 360 starts around £409/€459, under $500, with combos climbing from there, and even the fuller bundles land meaningfully below the Antigravity A1's roughly $1,599 positioning. As one drone outlet put it bluntly, that entry price makes the A1's current pricing hard to defend once side-by-sides circulate. Insta360 created the category; DJI is trying to price it into a commodity.
Then the asterisk that shadows every DJI launch this year. The Avata 360 is not officially sold in the United States through DJI's own website; US buyers had to wait until March 30 and go through third-party retailers like Amazon and B&H. This is the now-familiar pattern of a global launch first and a hedged, retailer-only US arrival later, a direct consequence of DJI's precarious regulatory standing under the FCC's scrutiny. At ~455g the drone also sits above the 250g threshold, so US pilots need to register with the FAA before flying. The A1's sub-250g weight sidesteps that, which is a real point in its favor depending on where you fly.
The 30,000-foot read
The Avata 360 is a clean example of the fast-follower playbook executed by a company with every structural advantage. DJI did not invent the 360 drone; it waited, watched Insta360 prove the demand, and then applied its imaging science, transmission tech, and scale to build something that feels less like an experiment and more like a finished tool, at a price the originator will struggle to match.
Whether it becomes the default 360 drone depends on two things outside the spec sheet: whether creators embrace the reframe-in-post workflow as more than a novelty, and whether DJI can actually get its hardware into buyers' hands in a market increasingly hostile to it. The engineering answered the first question convincingly. The second one, in 2026, is no longer DJI's to answer alone.
